DMV released the California Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) under a pilot program which is limited to up to 1.5M residents, on a first come, first served basis, that may participate in the pilot until the Legislature opens it to all Californians. We are already leading the nation in the number of mDLs approved by a state. These mDLs are certified for use by the TSA at airports and an increasing number of convenience stores nationally are accepting the mDL TruAge feature for age verification. In addition, these mDLs are also enabled for online/remote verification of identity. We are following international guidelines on securely and digitally transmitting Driver’s License and Identity Card information to business and government entities that are enabled to accept this technology. These mDLs provide a convenient and privacy-preserving channel for California residents for identity and age verification purposes. We are uniquely utilizing two popular standards from ISO and W3C (compared to just ISO in the rest of the nation) with the goal of enabling these to market faster and providing options for businesses with varied technology limitations.
